The percent of parents and students scoring an A or a B indicate a weak academic area in foreign languages. Due to staffing Spanish and Mandarin Chinese are the only languages offered. On line Distant Education language courses are available to students who wish to complete their three years in a foreign language. Students indicated in 2010 that they wanted more integration of technology in their instruction. QM/HS has responded by adding Smartboards and Smart Exchange software for use by every staff member. Training on the new technology and its applications is ongoing. Parents responses indicated a desire to have academic standards raised. Students indicated a desire to increase access to instructional technology with 23%. This is also reflected in the question on how students feel they are being prepared for the 21st Century. Both students and parents agreed that the second important area was to increase academic support programs. QM/HS currently has an afternoon instructional support period that is available to all students 4 afternoons each week. An athletic study hall is monitored by a staff member when the staff has meetings or training. Quantico Middle / High School, Quantico, VA 7

Attendance Rates: This graph shows average daily attendance for the last five years. Quantico Middle / High School, Quantico, VA 26

27 c. Retention rates: Retention and dropout issues at QMHS are not a concern at present. d. Discipline incidents: Discipline incidents remain consistently below 5% for the past three years and therefore are not a concern at QMHS. QMHS maintains a strong safety and security program. Students behavior is consistent with the high expectations for respect for peers and adults in a predominantly Marine community, where high expectations are the norm and a culture of high regard is commonplace. Parents are very proactive and receptive when the school has a need to schedule a meeting. One reason for minimal discipline is the close communication between parents, students and school, and the close supervision of the QMHS staff who are additionally seen as responsible role models. We are working on expanding and providing more structure for this valuable program. Additionally, our school psychologist and guidance counselors have implemented support groups to address student issues as they arise. e. Suspension, expulsion, and dropout rates: This is not an issue at QMHS. Our student attendance rate shows our consistent patterns for students being in school. Parents frequently come to QMHS to check on their students and many times eat lunch with them. f. Achievement and failure patterns across grade levels: Achievements: Named 5 th AP District of the Year, and District Honor Roll (along with PR schools District awards) $794, in scholarships for Senior class of 2015 (10 of 29 graduates) Honor Societies include: National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta (Math Honor Society), Model United Nations QMHS students consistently attend high quality institutions for post- secondary education including The University of Florida, Queens College, Texas A & M, University of Iowa and more. Our graduates also attend military academies including the Air Force Academy, Naval Academy, Annapolis, West Point Military Academy, US Merchant Marine Academy, all on scholarships amounting to up to $300,000 each. MCJROTC - Navel Honor School with Distinction for the past 10 years and continues this storied tradition. Competitions include drill competitions throughout the region and placing in the top 5% of all MCJROTC programs in the region. QMHS instituted its inaugural Alumni Hall of Distinction and Athletic Hall of Fame program in Model United Nations program instituted in and has competed in several competitions in the region Quantico Middle / High School, Quantico, VA 27

28 Failure Patterns: Quantico Middle High School s failure rates continue to remain low, as students are challenged by the increased rigor across the curriculum and access to high level courses such as AP Environmental Science, AP English Literature, AP English Language, AP US History and AP US Government and Politics. QMHS will continue to expand Honors and AP courses in collaboration with DoDEA Virtual School for additional courses, and Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) for Dual Enrollment, providing a robust palette of high level programs for our students to be challenged and ensure their college and career readiness. g. Stability/mobility of students: Most of our student population remains on base for 1-3 years, depending on the status of the sponsor and the needs of their service component. h. Student Demographics: The QMHS student body is comprised of 2.5% American Indian or Alaskan Native; 3.41% Asian; 17.34% Black/African American; 62% White; and 4.64% Multi-ethnic,.3% Hawaiian or Pacific Islander. i. ESL/ELL Numbers: The English as a Second Language (ESL) enrollment is at 5.8% (n=19) for SY , which is 2.2% less than We currently have 19 ESL students of which 11 are receiving direct services. Issues of school climate: The personal connection that the school has with parents and students is something that makes QM/HS special. Since most of the students reside on the base, the community and parent support is high. The parents take an active role in their child's learning by communicating directly with teachers and supporting school events. Teachers and administrators know the students by their first name. Community partnerships include a full-time School's Resource Officer (SRO) on site during the school day and at all evening events. The SRO is provided by the MCB Quantico Provost Marshall's Office. A S.T.E.M. summer camp is held for middle school students and supported by community engineers in its 6 th year (Summer ). We also host the Tiger Woods Foundation program which heavily supports STEM throughout the school year, by providing students and space. Our students also compete for the Tiger Woods Scholarship each year. In , one of our students won the scholarship and is now attending George Mason University. Through the CSI process, QM/HS has a parent/student focus group that meets quarterly information from this group is as follows: Areas of Achievement Afterschool program helps students who pursue extra duty or help those who are struggling Integration of new students Band/chorus Activities are available to everyone After-school tutoring Small student body English/LA Small classes Family/community Quantico Middle / High School, Quantico, VA 29

Any readily available characteristics of students in school. Quantico is a Marine Corps base; therefore all of our students are military dependent children, foreign and domestic. In order to attend our school, the military family must reside on base. This lends itself to a very close community, geographically, which leads to a high percentage of participation in extra-curricular activities and a large number of our parents attend our events. Quantico Middle / High School, Quantico, VA 30

31 6. School Instructional Data: a. Teacher Instructional practices (most common instructional techniques used) Our teachers deliver instruction using the most current, research-based practices and DoDEA standards. We have incorporated STEM in classes as an enhancement for the curriculum. Teachers receive professional development in instructional practices aligned with their content and standards. Differentiation is emphasized and teachers use a variety of tools to help support this. Learning styles, reading levels, and math baselines are only a few of the means of determining specific skill levels, and lessons are designed to help students reach their greatest potential. b. Student-engagement time QMHS master schedule currently includes eight blocks, four each day, with teachers instructing six of the eight blocks. Students also participate in an after school program which meets four days per week, Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 2:20 3:00. Attending after school is optional for all students. c. Staff development opportunities These are provided by in-house experts among the staff, district Instructional Support Specialists, and DoDEA/DDESS experts. As part of the College and Career Ready Standards (CCRSM) rollout, our math department participated in a pre-ap training, directed by College Board, and explored math topics and looked at innovative ways to deliver rigor in mathematics. DoDEA has a timeline which directs the aligned implementation of the CCRSM over a two-year period. Currently, Pre-K-5 schools are being trained in the new methods, and in , middle school and high schools will receive their training. d. School Organization (e.g. grade level, departmentalized, block, interdisciplinary We are a 6-12 organization, consisting of middle school grade level teams, and academic departments, with department chairs e. Support programs (e.g. AVID, tutoring, special-needs programs, support classes) We offer AVID, SPED and support classes including Read 180, Math Lab, and Learning Strategies. f. Enrichment programs (AP programs, gifted, honors) We offer Honors and AP courses. We provide support for gifted students through services provided by DoDEA Virtual School and other resources. 32 7. Community Information: a. Community programs and facilities available to students The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) provides special education and related services to students ages 3-21 with disabilities including physical, emotional, communication and learning impairments. Youth and Teen center provides recreational opportunities for all interested students up until the age of 18. The Gray Research Center, our base library, is open to all students with a valid military identification card. The center also has a Quantico Marker Space where students can come every 1 st and 3 rd Wednesday and work in the areas of robotics, programing, circuitry, and many other STEM related fields. The School Liaison Program provides information, resources, and referrals to all military families with school age children grades K through 12. b. School/military partnerships We currently have partnerships with the PEA, Marine Corps Systems Command, the Base Education Center for AP testing, and Lincoln Military Housing for school functions. c. Recent community/area change patterns The natural change pattern from sponsors rotating bases is to be expected. When support is needed for particular crises, such as a spouse being killed, there are systems in place such as Family Advocacy Program to help support our students and their families. d. Parent and Community organizations that encourage and support the school We currently have a Parent Educators Association and we have parents involved in our CSI student/parent focus group.
