4 IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IB works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessments. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

13 Standard Level (SL) vs. Higher Level (HL) Standard Level (SL) Course is two terms long May completed as one term in the junior year, and one in the senior year, or both terms in the same school year Option of testing in May of the junior or senior year Higher Level (HL) Course is two terms long Involves more content, and in some cases greater rigor Must be taken over two consecutive school years One term will be completed in the junior year, the second in the senior year Testing happens in May of the senior year Must take 3 for the diploma, cannot take more than 4

14 Diploma Student vs. DP Course Student IB Diploma Candidate Students complete 6 IB classes Students complete the CAS, TOK and EE requirements Must take at least 3, but no more than 4 HL classes. The remaining classes will be SL Completes exams given by the IB teacher, projects set by the IB program (internal assessments, or IAs) and exams administered by IB (external). Students must receive a minimum of 24 points in order to receive a diploma. Each IB exam can earn a student 7 points towards the diploma. Up to three points are available from the Theory of Knowledge assessment and the Extended Essay IB DP Course Student Students enroll in 1-6 courses of their choice (Schedule permitting). They must take exams for any classes they enroll in. Encouraged to take more than one IB class, but it is not a requirement for non-transfer students Encouraged to complete a smaller amount of CAS hours and will be encouraged to take the TOK course. To qualify as a transfer student, you must take a minimum of 3 IB courses (TOK is included) and sit for the exams.

16 Theory of Knowledge Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is central to the educational philosophy of the International Baccalaureate. TOK challenges students and teachers to reflect critically on diverse ways of knowing and areas of knowledge. Students must complete this course as well as a word essay from a list of ten titles prescribed by IB. They also complete a 10 minute presentation in class.

17 Creativity, Action, Service Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) is a framework for learning through service. Designed to involve students in new roles. Students spend time building relationships and developing the self-worth of both server and served. Students must be involved for 3 hours per week (on average) from August of 11 th grade until April of 12 th grade.

18 Extended Essay Extended Essay (EE) is an in-depth study on a topic of the student s choice. Students choose a staff supervisor who guides them through the process. The upper limit is 4000 words for EE. Great way to learn how to perform research and write at a college level.

24 Diploma Program Fees In October of the testing year, the students will pay a one time registration fee ($160) and a per exam fee ($110). Students must take the exam in each IB class they enroll. A Parent Club for IB has been formed and is working on fundraisers to off-set this cost. Students who qualify for free or reduced meal program will pay $5 for each exam fee and $5 for the registration fee.

25 How to apply The application is available online on the Oakmont web site starting November 3 rd Application is due no later than February 2, Students will need to fill out one form and submit a copy of all their grades and standardized testing scores since 7 th grade. At this time there is no need for letters of recommendation or placement testing. Transfer students submit their application to our District Office.

26 Shadow Days Shadow Days are for interested IB students (not already enrolled at Oakmont). Students will visit either 1 st and 2 nd period IB classes or 3 rd and 4 th period IB classes with an IB student as a guide. Shadow Dates are yet to be determined. They will be posted on the IB website within the next week.
