1 F O RT U N A H I G H S C H O O L Back to School NEWSLETTER A U G U S T, NEW FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL Monday, August 8:20am Back to School Days August 10th & 11th 8:30am - 6:00pm Fortuna High Library Our Back-to-School process has begun, so parents and students are required to complete school contracts and update any emergency contacts, phone numbers and address changes, to help us stay in touch with you. Some of the forms to be completed are the Medical Release to Treat, Free and Reduced Lunches, Cell Phone Policy Contract, etc. It is necessary for each student to attend with a parent on one of these days, to sign contracts and other necessary forms as well as have a school photo taken, for purchase and for their school ID card. Parents and students who have outstanding fines or books must remedy all of them to receive your class assignments. Our librarian, Lynn Owsley and SFO clerk, Ronda Ambrosini will be available in the library both days to assist you. (See page 6) We are looking forward to seeing all of you and to a great school year! ARE YOU PREPARED FOR SCHOOL? Teacher requested items: Pencils (for math) Blue or black ink pens 1 3-ring binders (you may need several) 3-hole binder paper Spiral notebooks w/ perforated paper Changing Class Schedules Before School Starts Once you have completed your Back to School Days packet and gotten your new class schedule, head to the office. There will be a sign up sheet and counselors will see students on a first come, first served basis. A.P. students must talk with teacher before any changes are made.
2 Fortuna Union High School District Fortuna High School th Street Fortuna, CA Fax: July 12, 2017 Hello Fortuna High Students and Parents, I hope that you are all enjoying a wonderful summer and are making the most out of the wonderful weather that we have been having. The high school is already buzzing with staff getting ready for the school year. The class of 2017 had some great accomplishments, and we wish them all the best as they move forward onto the next step in their lives. However, it is time to start thinking about the upcoming school year. The big news for Fortuna High School will be the early start date for the school year. This year the first day of school is August 14th and that day will be upon us very quickly. Starting school early will provide many advantages to Fortuna High Students. Students will now be on a college like schedule with the first semester finals taking place before winter break, they will also have two additional weeks of instruction prior to the AP and other state mandated exams. For those 12th grade students the early date will also give them time to meet with counseling staff and start preparing their college, and FAFSA applications. There are some exciting things happening here at the high school, and I believe that this is a truly amazing place to send your kids to school. We are excited to welcome a few new staff members to the Fortuna High Team. Long time Fortuna Elementary School teacher Norm Sotomayor will be joining our staff in the counseling department. Academy of the Redwoods teacher Mark Thom will be a fantastic addition to our science department as a result of teaching legend Pam Halstead s retire this year. We are also excited about the additions of new teachers Whitney Dostal and Tricia Aaron in our Resource Department. We are delighted to welcome the approximately 235 students in the class of 2021 and are also eagerly anticipating the return of all of our Huskies in August. Please remember to read through the entire newsletter as it contains many important happenings that will take place between now and the start of school. If there are any further questions you can keep up to speed on the school website at or come by the office and see us in person. I look forward to seeing you this fall, and enjoy the rest of your summer. Thank you, Clint Duey Principal Fortuna High School is a supportive community of learners encouraging excellence, practicing integrity, and preparing for the future. 2

6 Overdue Library Books and Textbooks Fortuna High School students check out books from the library through a computerized program that keeps track of all text and library books. When students check-in their books, the system will clear the student of that book. Students must turn in the exact book number that was issued to them. If the book is not returned and checked in, a charge is assessed to the student at the full replacement value. Fines may also be assessed to books that are damaged. It is imperative that this matter be cleared during Back to School Days (August 10 & 11) in order for those students to pick up their schedule for the fall. Bring overdue library books or textbooks to the Library, or full payment in the form of cash, check, money order or credit card to the library. Payments and returned books will be accepted from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If payment of this obligation causes extreme hardship, methods of payment may be arranged through the Assistant Principal. The California Education Code states that any high school may withhold yearbooks, grades, diplomas, and transcripts from students with charges for lost or damaged books until these payments are made, so clear any charges up as soon as possible. SPORTS SEASON PASSES Students Do you want to attend all of the regular home sporting events without paying each time? Buy your Student All Sports Sticker for $15 at the Student Finance Office and get in at all regular home games. On sale beginning Wednesday, August 23 rd during morning break and at lunch. Adults Buy your All Sports Pass for $50 per adult beginning Wednesday, August 23 rd Purchase at the SFO 6
