1 W I N T E R E D I T I O N the 4-H Newsflash December 2012 January 2013 Hungry to Help At the right is the Food Table from Farm City Week Banquet. Black Creek 4-H Club, Cleveland Equestrian 4-H Club and Target Sports 4-H Club contributed 268lbs of the 867lbs shown on this table. The balance came from those invited to the banquet. Don't forget we will be collecting food until our DECEMBER 10TH COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING where youth will bag items for Backpack Buddies like last year. Please bring grocery bags. Festival of Trees Above is some of the ornaments that youth attending the October County Council meeting made for the Go Green with 4-H tree displayed at the Medical Mall currently during the Keep Johnston County Beautiful Festival of Trees. The Johnston County 4-H Alumni Association sponsors this tree and youth at County Council decided on at theme and created the ornaments on the tree. The Festival runs through Wednesday December 5th. After this time the tree will be on display at the Cooperative Extension office on Hwy 210. Save the Date! Record Books Awards Forms December 28, H Record Books Due to 4-H Office by 5:00PM this day. 2 THE LOREM IPSUMS WINTER H Achievement Program This program provides awards and recognition for Outstanding 4-H ers and Clubs from the 2012 Year. See descriptions for these awards below. Links are available here. Junior and Senior 4-H er of the Year These awards are given to youth who have experienced a stellar year in their accomplishments through 4-H, and their promotion of their club and other aspects of 4-H to others in their community. 4-H Club of the Year, Animal Science Club of the Year, New club of the Year These awards are for clubs who have had exceptional accomplishments by the members of their club and as a group. Awards are given for clubs with a general 4-H focus, Animal Science specific focus, or clubs who have begun meeting in the past year. J. Monroe and Ina W. Parker Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is established in memory of the dedication and support given to the 4-H experience of their daughter, Rebecca P. Murray, in Johnston County. Not to exceed $200, annually, the scholarship will pay to the institution tuition and limited personal expense of the recipient for any out-of-county learning experience such as 4-H Congress, 4-H Camp, Washington Citizenship Focus or even post high school tuition if selected. The scholarship may be received by an individual only once in the age categories of Junior, Senior and Post High School. A selection committee will award one scholarship each year. JB Coats Citizenship Award This award is presented in honor of the 4-H participation of the sons of J. B. Coats of Smithfield in the 1930's and 40's. They credit 4-H as one of the greatest influences on their careers. Mr. Roy Coats of Smithfield, who was a North Carolina 4-H State President and charter member of the Johnston County 4-H Alumni Association. The winner receives a silver tray inscribed "J.B. Coats Citizenship Award, Johnston County 4-H Spirit Award Do you have someone in your club that is the picture of Enthusiasm when it comes to 4-H Meetings, suggestions for activities and overall participation? Then you should nominate them for the Spirit Award. Each club can nominate 1 person per 7 members in their club. So if you have 14 club members you can nominate 2 youth. Perfect Attendance Do you have someone in your club attended every single meeting from January 1, 2012 December 31, 2012? Then you should put them on your perfect attendance list. These youth will get a certificate and small 4-H item commemorating this accomplishment. There is no limit to the number of youth you can list. If your entire club qualifies, put them on the list. 2

3 THE LOREM IPSUMS WINTER 2016 A.S.P.I.R.E. 2 HIGHER EDUCATION: ACT SUPPLEMENTAL PREPARATION IN RURAL EDUCATION Do you want to go to college? Do you want help gaining admissions to college? Are you intimidated by college entrance examinations such as the ACT? If you answered YES to any of these questions then the A.S.P.I.R.E. Program is perfect for you! The A.S.P.I.R.E. program is designed to bridge deficits in rural high school students performance on the ACT College Entrance Examination in order to increase the number of students pursuing higher education. This is a cooperative initiative through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University and North Carolina Cooperative Extension. The program includes The Princeton Review ACT study manual, The Princeton Review 1,296 practice question manual, 4 ACT full-length practice exams with score analysis and breakdown, The Princeton Review selective college admissions booklet, and 30 hours of class time instruction, where students County Council December Meeting will learn the skills they need to be able to tackle the ACT! An A.S.P.I.R.E. ACT class will be offered in Johnston County at The Cooperative Extension Office, 2736 NC 210 Hwy, Smithfield, NC The class will begin on Saturday January 5th with a diagnostic ACT exam. Then classes will be most Monday and Thursdays from 3:30 5:30 PM beginning January 7th and running through Wednesday March 13th. There will be 4 full length ACT Exams for you to practice your techniques learned in class. This class will be offered to prepare sophomores and juniors for ACT examinations. If you are interested in participating in the A.S.P.I.R.E. ACT course offered in your community please click on the link below for an A.S.P.I.R.E Application and return it to the address on the last page by December 15th or contact, Lori McBryde, at or Lori_McBryde@ncus.edu to receive and A.S.P.I.R.E. application! I just wanted to remind everyone that we would be having our last County Council/Leader meeting of the year on Monday December 10th at 6:30PM. If County Council officers could be here by 6:00PM to go over the agenda that would be great! We have a full agenda to discuss and will be packing our bags for backpack buddies, so don't forget to bring your food and extra grocery bags if you have them. The purpose of County Council is to involve youth 9 and older from all clubs in the county to share what they are doing in their clubs with others and find out what is going on with 4-H at the County, District and State levels and take that information back to their club meetings to share with those who cannot attend. We are also going to be accepting nominations for our 2013 County Council Officers. The positions are for youth 12 and up. A brief description follows. 3

President - Runs the meetings at County Council, may be called upon to be a voting delegate at District and State events when necessary. Assists in planning meeting topics and selected to attend special events throughout the year, such as Farm City Week Banquet, 4-H Lifetime Achievement Awards (Gala) and others. Vice President - Fulfills all the duties of President in their absence. Assist in planning meeting topics and other 4-H functions. Secretary - Takes roll and minutes at CC meetings, and provides those in a timely manner to the 4-H agent, for distribution to the 4-H membership before the next meeting. Assist in planning meeting topics and other 4-H functions. Reporter - Encouraged to write news articles for the 4-H Update and newspapers about upcoming 4-H events and what happened after. Historian - Be present at as many 4-H events as possible and take photos for yearly scrapbook for District Competition at District Activity Day. Will gather photos from other sources as well, and compile scrapbook with supplies from 4-H office. If you are interested in running for any of these offices, please let me know. We will also be taking nominations on Monday night at County Council. Voting will be online via a survey before January 1st. 4-H ers win National Honors! A Johnston County 4-H er earned top honors among more than 330 of the nation s most knowledgeable 4-H Horse Program members during the 2012 Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup, an annual event hosted by the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky. Taylor Knittel, 17, of Clayton, earned the highest overall individual honor in Horsebowl, a team quiz bowl contest, which tests a person s knowledge of the horse. Taylor is the daughter of John and Tonya Knittel and is a Senior at Cleveland High School. As Horsebowl champion, Knittel received a $500 college scholarship from the American Quarter Horse Association, as well as a trophy from the Virginia 4-H Horse Program. North Carolina s Horsebowl team earned 3 rd place overall out of 21 competing teams from across the country. Team members were Taylor Knittel of Clayton, Kendall Wolford of Wake Forest, Kathryn Williams of Moyock, Elizabeth Mayo of Tarboro and Mina Greenlee of Mount Pleasant. Their coach was Lori Stroud of Clayton. Other contests held during the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup were Public Speaking, Individual Presentation, Team Presentation, Hippology, and Horse Judging. All contestants must be 14 to 19 years old and qualified for the competition by earning top honors at their state 4- H horse contest. Taylor and Kendall were both members of the Johnston County Senior Horsebowl team that placed first at the NC State Contest in March, said Lori Stroud. The girls also represented North Carolina at the Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championships in Perry, Georgia. They were on the champion team and Taylor was high overall individual and Kendall placed third overall. 4

Kendall was named high overall individual and Taylor won reserve champion individual honors. North Carolina 4-H Alumni and Friends Awards The Johnston County 4-H Alumni Association is made up of many members who are previous winners in various projects at the county, district and state levels. This year six association members were honored for their contributions to 4-H and their community as alumni. Mr. Bruce Woodard, of Smithfield, was recognized with the N.C. 4-H Alumni Full Circle Award. Ms. Sarah Ann Butts Sasser, of Smithfield, was recognized as the N.C. 4H Alumni Outstanding Citizen. Miss Leslie Hash, of Clayton, was this years N.C. 4-H Young Alumni recipient. Three other Johnston County Alumni were also inducted into the North Carolina 4-H Hall of Fame. The North Carolina 4-H Alumni and Friends Association honors people who have made a significant impact on the North Carolina 4-H Program. All recipients were recognized during State 4-H Congress, held in Raleigh.
