Both students and staff are working hard in the classroom. Our athletic teams are on the second half of their seasons. Mock trial teams, the forensic team, and the academic decathlon team are all busy getting ready for upcoming competitions. At the end of this month, on Tuesday, February 27, our Freshman will have an opportunity to visit three different levels of post high school education, Moraine Park Technical College, U.W. Fond du Lac, and Marian University, all in Fond du Lac. Our Sophomores will be taking the Pre-ACT test, the Juniors will be taking the ACT and our Seniors will not have school. We are encouraging our Seniors to use this day as a Future Day. In other words, use this day to schedule a college visit, consult with a military recruiter, explore community service opportunities, or make arrangements to visit some occupations that they may be interested in pursuing in their future. As always thank you for your continued support, my door is always open. Feel free to stop in and say hello. 2 Page 2 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Athletic Director s As the winter sport season is approaching their playoff time, there are a few dates/activities that I would like you to be aware of: Wrestling - Swimming - Girls Basketball - Boys Basketball - Conference meet is February 3rd at Winneconne Sectional meet is February 10th at Winneconne Conference meet is February 3rd at Two Rivers Sectional meet is February 10th at Cedarburg Playoffs start on Tuesday February 20th Playoffs start on Tuesday February 27th Spring Sports are fast approaching. If your son/daughter has played a fall or winter sport they are good to go as far as paperwork for participation. If they have not, they will need to have: a physical or alternate year card on file, have online registration complete with the sports tab completed, and a concussion test. This is a semi-formal dance. No blue jeans will be allowed. Please no hats either. **Winterfest tickets will be sold in the concession stand during lunch and CIA starting on Tuesday. Tickets will be $8.00 or they will be $10.00 at the door.

4 Page 4 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Scholarships Applications for the Local Scholarship will be available in March online at the Berlin School website: Completed applications will be accepted March 1-23 in Student Services. Applications must be completed online and printed. Last year, the Local Scholarship Committee gave over $110,000 to high school seniors who were continuing their education. This is a great opportunity for all seniors who plan to attend college or technical college! Make sure you check out Student Services or our website under Scholarship Information for more scholarships that are offered that you may qualify for. 5 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Page 5 Our mission at Berlin High School is to partner with parents to support our students in becoming college and career ready. We feel this is key to our success. We are hoping to partner with all parents of junior students to help prepare them for the upcoming state tests - the ACT and WorkKeys. The ACT test which all juniors must take in the spring is only one of the ways our school is assessed on the state report card. So to help our juniors do well on the required ACT test we have implemented a number of interventions. As juniors, the students will be taking the ACT on Tuesday, February 27 and the WorkKeys assessment on Wednesday, February 28. Both of these state tests are important to your child s future and our ability to support them in their continuous learning to become successful. These tests are the ultimate demonstration of their academic learning and skills, as well as showing they are college and career ready. As a school and district, we are also assessed on the ACT and when our students do their best on this test, we have a more accurate representation of our district. Earlier this year the juniors took a Pre-ACT test to help prepare them. This was a shortened version of the test that included English, Reading, Math and Science tests. We have received the results of these tests and our teachers are analyzing this data to be better able to meet student needs in the classroom. We have given students their individual results and sent a copy of the summary page home to parents. Students also received a checklist of lessons in an online program (Career Cruising) that was personalized for your child to show them the lessons that would be most beneficial for them to work on based on their scores. This checklist was given to them along with their results. Communication is key, and we want to make all junior parents aware of the many opportunities that are available for our students this year. We have been meeting with junior students recently, but it is important for parents to have this information as well. Your child was given a list of opportunities to assist them on the upcoming ACT test. Please ask them to see this information, so you can support their preparation and learning as well. 1. 6 Page 6 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Pre-ACT On Tuesday, February 27, all sophomores at Berlin High School will be taking the PreACT test. The PreACT is a multiple-choice assessment that helps students prepare for the experience of taking the ACT test and provides information regarding their future performance on the exam. PreACT will provide valuable insights on college and career readiness to students, educators and schools while students still have time to make adjustments and improve. The paper-based PreACT is patterned after the ACT, using the same types of test questions, same score scale, and same format. It is designed to model the ACT test experience, providing students with the ultimate preparation and practice. PreACT includes exams in English, mathematics, reading and science, just like the ACT test, but does not have a writing test. PreACT includes fewer questions and will take less time to administer than the ACT. PreACT score reports will offer a broad view of students college and career readiness, identifying academic strengths and areas for improvement and providing information about careers that match students interests. School score reports will provide data to help teachers and counselors target interventions, inform classroom instruction and guide students in course selection. We will be providing reports to students and parents on their child s results. Teachers and administrators will also be analyzing the results to help in making changes in curriculum and strategies to support student learning. The school will also be providing supports for students in their preparation for the state ACT test in their junior year. 7 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Page 7 Raising the Bar The high school track and field program is requesting your help with purchasing a pole vaulting facility. Currently our program is unable to train, or enter, any athletes in the pole vaulting competitions. As a result our boys and girls teams must begin every away meet behind in points to the teams whose athletes place in the event. Also, with a pole vaulting facility we would be able to host major meets like regionals and sectionals. Finally, there is the potential for one of our athletes to earn a college scholarship should she or he be skilled enough in this event. The recent reconstruction of our track and football field has been a real plus for our athletic program, and the community. We would like to help complete our facility with the addition of a pole vaulting area. To help we are hoping you will consider contributing to this effort with a monetary donation. Our goal is to raise $20,000 in order to construct a runway, as well as buy a landing pit, standards, poles and crossbars. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. Game 1 starts at 7:00 p.m. Tickets will be available from any Berlin FFA member or in the high school office. Tickets are $7 in advance or $10 at the door. All money raised goes to support Berlin FFA members wanting to attend leadership workshops, conferences, and conventions. Spring Play BHS Proudly Presents: Our Town Award winning story of a small American town in the early 1900 s and the everyday lives of its citizens. Come support our school, our drama students, and get a history lesson into Berlin s past as it relates to the play. Performance dates: February 23 & February 24 at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 in advance or $8 at the door. Tickets are now available and may be purchased in advance in the high school office between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

9 BERLIN HIGH SCHOOL Page BHS Songwriting Contest Do you feel that you can write great songs? Join in on the BHS song writing contest! This contest will be sponsored jointly by the Wordsmiths of Berlin writing club and the BHS music department. What: Students (either individually or with a partner) submit an original song of their creation. Songs must contain lyrics; musical accompaniment is recommended, but not required. Submissions: 1. Copy of the lyrics 2. Recorded performance of the song (either video or audio) 3. A one to two-page essay (or video-taped discussion) explaining the songwriting process (inspirations, difficulties, word choices, themes, collaborations, etc.) All three submission components will factor into the submission scoring. Who: This contest is open to any Berlin High School student or student pair. When: Submissions will be accepted from March 19 to April 6. Winners: Cash prizes ($30, $20, $10) will be awarded for the top three entries. Video performances of the top three songs will be posted on the school website. Basic Contest Requirements School appropriate lyrics / theme 1 to 5 minutes in length Individual or partner submissions (only one submission per person) Musical accompaniment encouraged, but not required Open to all genres of music Open for submissions from March 19 to April 6 The formal judges for the contest will include staff from both the English and Music departments. Song recording may be performed by an artist or group other than the writer(s) One singing artist may perform more than one contestants entries. Although a good performance can help to effectively display the intended song, this is a song WRITING contest rather than a singing competition. Entries are judged on the merit of the song rather than the singing performance.
