First opening its doors in September of 2002, SunRidge offers a Waldorf methods curriculum to approximately 200 students in grades K-8. The school emphasizes small class sizes and strong parent participation, with a successful fund-raising component that supports enrichment classes in Spanish, handwork, woodworking, games, movement, music, and life skills in our upper grades. SunRidge School advances the belief that today s children need much more than cognitive skills if they are to meet the challenges of our world. The Waldorf curricula places equal emphasis on education of the head (thinking), the heart (feeling), and the hands (willing/purposeful action), so that children develop their capacities for bringing imaginative thinking, beauty, and direction to their lives. By framing its academic components within an artistic, hands-on, holistic context, SunRidge School strives to provide a stimulating and supportive environment that allows each child s full potential to unfold. 4 Opportunities for Parental Involvement Contact Pam Koppel (707) One of SunRidge School's primary foundations is its encouragement of, and dependence on, parent involvement and support. This support takes many forms, including the contribution of time to school committees, events, work groups, and other needed activities, as well as donations through our pledge program that support special events and educational enrichment activities beyond what can be covered by state-provided income. All parent work and financial contributions are voluntary. We believe that when parents understand the importance of these needs to the success of the school--and understand the benefits of the enriched community life that result from participating in these efforts-- that they will contribute in ways and amounts that are within their means. SunRidge was able to designate over $207,000 for educational enrichment classes and instructional assistants in as a result of parent donations. SunRidge s Parent Council is comprised of an elected parent from each grade. This body meets monthly to help coordinate the support needs for the school and to discuss and help address issues and concerns of parents. The SunRidge Charter Council is comprised of three faculty, three parents, and one non-parent community member. This elected body works in an advisory capacity to the school director and the Twin Hills Board of Trustees. Other parent committees include Fundraising, Site Planning and Development, Special Events, and Gardening. SunRidge also encourages parent participation in classroom activities and field trips. 6 School Climate School Safety Plan Sunridge School has a Safe School Plan that addresses needs and implementation steps for crisis mitigation & prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery, as well as for maximizing the social and cultural safety of our school environment. Our school typically has only 1-2 suspensions per year, no expulsions, no serious injuries, and no crime. In addition, we have adopted a number of health and safety policies including: Policy for students and staff relating to documenting immunizations Policy and procedures regarding reporting of suspected child abuse and neglect Procedures for safe evacuation of buildings Policy relating to preventing contact with blood-borne pathogens Policy relating to the administration of prescription drugs and other medicines Policies regarding sexual harassment and bullying Policies and procedures regarding suspension and expulsion Policy regarding gang affiliation and activity Student Rules and Discipline policy that stresses safety as a primary guiding principle. SunRidge has a comprehensive set of student discipline policies and procedures regarding substance abuse, violence, and harassment of any kind. The central tenets of our school discipline policy are safety, respect, and responsibility. School rules and consequences are designed to maintain a balance between respecting individual freedom and having clearly defined standards that serve our educational environment. Discipline is intended to be proactive and provide opportunities for learning healthy social interaction skills. Consequences are intended to provide opportunities for redemption, learning, and forgiveness. The ultimate goal of our discipline policy and procedures is the development of selfdiscipline in our students, fostering the emerging ability of our students to recognize and demonstrate respectful and responsible behavior, to monitor their own actions, and to behave in ways that promote a safe and healthy school community. 13 Student Performance California Standards Tests (CST) The California Standards Tests (CSTs) show how well students are doing in relation to the state content standards. The CSTs include English-language arts (ELA) and mathematics in grades 2 through 11; science in grades 5, 8, and 9 through 11; and history-social science in grades 8, and 10 through 11. Student scores are reported as performance levels. All teachers are expected to attend at least 3 days of professional development anually in areas of designated need, such as classroom management, curriculum development, individualizing instruction, students with special needs, etc. Professional trainers and consultants are brought in to work with staff both individually and in groups. Teachers are encouraged to attend professional development opportunities offered by SCOE and other agencies and trainers. Teachers with provisional credentials participate in the North Coast Beginning Teachers Program.
