4 4 OSLO, NORWAY Norway is one of the three Scandinavian countries in the Northern part of Europe. The country has a population of 5 million and one of the lowest crime rates in the world. The Norwegians very much enjoy the space and the diverse nature, and visitors are often astonished by the active way of life. Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences (HiOA) is located in the eastern part of Norway. Eastern Norway is by far the most populous region in Norway and includes the capitol and financial centre, Oslo. Eastern Norway offers a variety of opportunities within higher education, business, industry and culture. Public transport makes it easy to travel between the largest cities and you don t have to travel very far to experience Norwegian fjords and mountains. Oslo hosts several higher education institutions. The total number of students in Oslo counts around 70,000. Although the city is a rather small capital with approximately 660,000 inhabitants, Oslo can boast of activities for almost anyone. You may choose from a wide range of cinemas, theatres, art galleries and museum, international restaurants and cafes. For those who enjoy the night scene, Oslo has a busy nightlife, including one of the best live music scenes in Northern Europe. The heart of downtown Oslo is on the waterfront, where cruise ships from all over the world find their way through the Oslo Fjord. There are many small islands and beaches, which during the summer can be easily reached from the city centre. HiOA has four faculties located at two campuses, one in Pilestredet in Oslo and one at Kjeller in Akershus. 7 ACCOMODATION & LIVING Living Costs Norway, and particularly Oslo, can be an expensive place to live. As a student you will need a minimum of approximately NOK 9,000-10,000 per month in order to cover your basic expenses. As an international student you are allowed to work 20 hours a week to further support yourself during your studies. If you are offered a student room from the Student Welfare Organisation (SiO) you have to pay a deposit of between 6,000-16,000 NOK when you sign the housing contract (two months rent). SiO offers more than 8000 student residences. Some of the student houses are more popular than others. The studio flats situated in central areas are the most popular options. If you choose more options, it is more likely that we can offer you housing. Transport Every city and town in Norway has a local bus service, and there is an extensive network of express coaches throughout the country and Norwegian State Railways (NSB) operates an excellent, though limited, system of lines. It is easy to get around in Oslo and Lillestrøm using the public transportation system. Always buy your ticket before boarding the bus/ tram/metro/train. It is much more expensive to buy the ticket on board. If you have a smart phone you can download the RuterBillett app. Tickets can also be bought from ticket vending machines and kiosks such as 7-Eleven or Narvesen. 7
