Vol. 15, No. 1 Features New Roads in Mexico City A Report on the 2006 UMAC Conference New Roads for University Museums September 25-29, 2006, Mexico City Andrew Simpson Mexico City is a seething mass of humanity perched between two mountain ranges in the central region of a nation encapsulating a rich Meso American heritage. It was also the venue for the 2006 UMAC conference. The International Commission on Museums (ICOM) committee focused on University Museums (UMAC) held an international conference (entitled New Roads for University Museums) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (the nation s largest university) in Mexico City from September 25 to October The conference was closed after the registration of 200 delegates from 36 nations. It consisted of academic papers, working groups, seminars and tours to heritage sites and university museums and collections. The conference was professionally organized with cogent and challenging academic content. The conference was organised through collaboration with ICOM Mexico and hosted by the National Autonomous University, Museo Universum, Antiguo Colegio San Ildefonso, Museo Nacional de Antropologia and Centro Cultural Betlemitas. The conference theme explored the questions, what 'New Roads' are currently being adopted by university museums to increase audiences and recognition, to improve standards and the use of collections for teaching and research. The conference theme also posed the question, what 'New Roads' are being implemented by universities to reorganize, manage and fund their museums and collections? The theme was derived from a recognition that university museums have been facing multiple challenges in the past decades, encompassing a redefinition of their missions, organization and management, their position within universities, and the need to connect with increasingly diverse audiences. At the same time, many university museums across the world struggle daily with a decline in resources, lack of autonomy, recognition, instability, and above all, lack of a clear role within the academy and contemporary society. In total 64 papers were presented covering a range of university museum issues and practices from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Finland, France, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, U.K and U.S.A. The papers presented can be classified into the following five broad areas. Specific: focussed on particular individual university museums and collections, their history and development. This included contributions from medical, archaeological, art history and science museums. Page - 9 -

CAUMAC Newsletter Banner at the conference opening identifies individual sponsors Operational: focussed on particular programs developed by individual university museums. This included travelling exhibitions, syllabus specific education programs in a variety of fields, the use of guest curators and curatorial collectives, education programs for preschool children, the development of online catalogues and interactive education programs, the use of volunteers and retirees in university museums, the development of The National Autonomous University of Mexico Library Page

CAUMAC Newsletter identification services for the public in science museums and the development of Braille museographic cards for disabled access to museum information. Strategic: focussed on the relationships between university museums, their host institution and their many audiences. This included contributions on their relevance to teaching, collaborative action between university museums at institutional and national levels, engendering external support for specific programs, the development of online knowledge communities, the promotion of academic freedom through university museums, the interpretation and marketing of university heritage, the development of commercial consultancies and engaging disadvantaged communities through university museums as an equity measure. Teaching: a small number of papers focussed specifically on educational theory and covered topics such as the use of museums for creative teaching strategies, the value of object based learning, the multiple uses of educational museum spaces, the role of art in advanced science education and self directed collections based learning. Museum Studies: a small number of papers covered the use of university museums in the delivery of museum studies programs. These contributions argued that the values of a campus museum in these circumstances are generic. They are sources of the delivery of practical component of study units and as a venue for internships or professional experiences. Strategic linkages to the triad of core university business (teaching, research and outreach) are essential for success. Some papers argued that Conference catering, reflecting the cuisine of the host nation, is always outstanding at UMAC Conferences Page

Vol. 15, No. 1 Conference poster; an example of developing museological practice using university collections university museums should be viewed as incubators for museum practice by taking risks and adopting experimental processes in their exhibition and public programs. Attendance at the conference included many curators attached to individual museums and collections, but also included middle management of many universities involved in cultural activities and/or policy development. Those universities that have recently recognised the strategic value of material collections have developed a range of new management positions Page

CAUMAC Newsletter Universum: The National Autonomous University of Mexico s spectacular science museum such as Director, Museum Services or Coordinator, Cultural Collections. The creation and centralised support for these new positions is an acknowledgement of institutional level responsibility for the development and use of material collections. This runs contrary to a trend in other universities to devolve responsibility to an administrative sub unit (Division, Faculty or Department) within the institution. There was evidence for a growing awareness, particularly among European delegates, of the value of university collections as representing national and international cultural heritage. This has been reflected in the resolution adopted by the Council of Europe in December This accords well with the theme of Universal Heritage that was the focus for the ICOM triennial meeting in Vienna in By contrast, a collective sector-wide awareness of the value of university collections in Australia has not advanced beyond the two 1990s AV-CC Cinderella Collections reports. This in itself provides a research opportunity for Australian university museum practitioners. The majority of the conference was conducted at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Mexico City with strong support from the national committee (ICOM Mexico). This university is the largest in Central America with a student population of over 300,000. It also houses some spectacular university museums. The Conference Organising Committee secured extensive sponsorship for all aspects of the event including a forthcoming book on university museums to be published in English and Spanish and incorporating selected papers resulting from the conference. 7 Vol. 15, No. 1 Conference delegates walk on a large backlit air photo of Mexico City on display in the Universum The National Autonomous University of Mexico has the longest academic and cultural history in the country for an educational institution. Activities cover all fields of science and humanities as well as the creative arts. It plays a fundamental role in the interpretation and transmission of Mexican culture. The University has campuses throughout Mexico, the majority being in the metropolitan area of Mexico City. The University houses a significant Cultural Centre, an Olympic Stadium and the National Library and Document Archives. It has 21 museums, a philharmonic orchestra, a film library, radio and television stations and a number of performance theatres. The University is currently in the process of being declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Universum is a large three-story multipurpose science museum within the grounds of the university. Exhibitions cover all aspects of the physical and natural sciences represented by university research. Universum has a staff of 60 and over 250 volunteers (including students), it is an interactive science centre designed specifically to cater for Mexican high school students. Approximately 250,000 visit each year. The museum has an active program of audience research and is clearly focussed on a mission of raising the scientific literacy of Mexico s high school population. The University is currently developing a Museum of Contemporary Art within the Mexico City campus. Page

CAUMAC Newsletter Other sites visited as part of the academic program during the conference included the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso in the central region of Mexico City. The walls of this former monastery are covered by the murals of the artist Diego Riviera. Conference sessions were also delivered at the National Museum of Anthropology. This is one of the most spectacular museums in the world highlighting a vast range of complex Central American prehistory. There was an opportunity to visit the Museo Interactivo De Economia (MIDE) located in the 18 th century Betlemitas Convent building. This museum, with significant funding from the Central Bank of Mexico, has been developed to provide interactive experiences about economic science. While it houses the numismatic collection of the Bank of Mexico there are no other objects in the collection. It is aimed at high school students and is an initiative designed to increase economic literacy. Many of the interactive installations are based on concepts developed at science centres from around the world. This is, however, the only known example of a museum of this type. It represents a bold educational initiative in a nation with such extremes of wealth and poverty. Macquarie University s first international Museum Studies student, Ana Cristina Sol, who recently (2006) graduated with a Masters degree, is employed as the Membership Officer for the museum. The Museum utilises a range of modern interactive technology allowing visitors to record their own stories. It also uses an innovative bar code system to unlock in depth interpretive information about exhibits. Perhaps one of the most surprising aspects of conference participation was the expanded potential for research collaboration. Delegates discussed the possibility of investigating the impact of reforms in the higher education sector on museums and collections. An interest in the development of studies in academic heritage was also discussed, in particular many delegates indicated an ongoing interest in how universities represent their own heritage and history through university museums. There are no comparable studies or examples in Australia to date. There is no doubt that this was the largest and most successful UMAC annual conference to date, the numbers attending were double those at many previous meetings. UMAC has throughout its short history been dominated by European and North American practitioners and interests. How the organisation continues to grow and capitalise on its increased exposure will determine if it develops into a truly global organisation representing university museums. UMAC website:- Page
